Periphery
‘Photographs furnish evidence. Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a photograph of it’ - Susan Sontag
The fascinating and frightening thing to me about modern day slavery, is that it exists right here, in our everyday. It is real, and yet for most of us, the fastest growing global crime, barely collides with our reality.
This locally researched body of work creates a constructed photographic narrative in response to the collective experiences of women trafficked for sex. It reflects an intimate viewpoint of a world that is more than a mere imagined notion, but is a tangible and vivid reality for a few.
This project was an opportunity to explore the hidden, the marginalised, and the voiceless among us, where abstraction represents the negation of responsibility, the unfocused distancing from the reality of the facts.
